We can approach Berwick along the coast from either the North or from the South. Both provide some excellent coastal walking, to reach the northernmost town in England, founded as an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the ancient kingdom of Northumbria! It was much disputed border town and for or more than 400 years, the area was central to historic border wars between the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, and several times possession of Berwick changed hands between the two kingdoms. It even had a spell as a freetown! There is also the magnificent River Tweed to meander along.
